Service Tip: What’s the Right Tire PSI for Your Vehicle?

For smooth, safe rides and long-lasting tires, it’s imperative to have the right tire PSI.

We hear from myriad drivers ask questions if tires should be inflated according to the maximum PSI listed on the sidewall of their tires; however, the maximum tire pressure is not optimum.

Don’t know how to find the suggested tire PSI? It’s on the sidewall of your tire, just below the big, bold letters of the manufacturer that reads, for instance, Max. Press 35 PSI, though most maximum tire PSI depends on the vehicle model. This number provides information of the maximum pressure your tires can carry!

When you over-inflate your tires, handling characteristics change, which can be detrimental to your tires. You might also experience superior cornering when tires are inflated to the max, but there’s a downside as your braking threshold could be at risk. One quick corner and your back end could slide out.

Your tires’ life decrease. The rubber rounds out at the top of the tire when your tires are inflated too much, and the center will quickly wear out. You’ll also reduce your traction and you could even cause a blowout—this sounds ten times terrifying especially on a Monday!

The right tire PSI for your vehicle?
The recommended optimum by manufacturers for your car is labeled in the door jam (by the VIN number) or in your owner’s manual. Some models even place the stickers on the trunk lid, in the console, or on the fuel door.

As aforementioned, the recommended tire pressure is usually between 30 to 35 PSI, which indicates the minimum amount of air pressure required to support your vehicle. Any less, and you’ll see poor fuel economy and handling as well as premature wear from too much flexing and tire overloading. Any more, and you’ll see a tire wear-out sooner with the risk of braking threshold and a terrible blowout!
