Different Versions of 4MATIC® AWD
Is 4MATIC® always on when you drive your Mercedes-Benz? For some 4MATIC® versions, it’s always activated; however, it depends on the particular 4MATIC® system with which your Mercedes-Benz is equipped.
- 4MATIC® Permanent All-Wheel Drive: This AWD system is available on Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as the C-Class and GLC SUV. 4MATIC® Permanent AWD divides the output between the vehicle’s axles at either a 45:55 ratio or 50:50 ratio. This depends on which model you own. The benefits of 4MATIC® Permanent AWD include better handling in inclement weather and a smoother driving experience.
- 4MATIC® Variable All-Wheel Drive: 4MATIC® Variable AWD is available on the CLA, B-Class, and GLA models and switches between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The type of drivetrain used depends on your driving behavior and road conditions with this version of 4MATIC®, meaning you’ll get responsive handling and increased fuel efficiency.
- AMG® Performance 4MATIC® Variable and Permanent All-Wheel Drive: Available on Mercedes-AMG® models, this 4MATIC® version shares many of the core logistics of other Mercedes-Benz AWD versions. This system differentiates itself with a multi-disc clutch with electrohydraulic control in the rear differential. This increases the handling, traction, and cornering.
