What is a Wheel Alignment?

Tire alignment involves correcting the angle of the tires by adjusting the suspension — not the tires or wheels themselves. Different vehicles require unique calibration depending on how they’re meant to perform and handle on the road. During your wheel alignment service, a certified technician will check your vehicle’s:

  • Camber: This refers to the inward or outward tilt of the tire when viewed from the front of the vehicle
  • Toe: This refers to how much your tires turn inward or outward when viewed from above
  • Caster adjustments: This is the angle of your steering axis when viewed from the side of your vehicle

After inspecting your tires, the technician will reposition your vehicle’s tires into the correct position for optimal performance.

When Should You Get Tire Alignment Service?

Your car’s tire alignment, or wheel alignment, is surprisingly sensitive and can be affected by repeated exposure to rugged roads or even an accidental bump against a curb. In general, it’s a good idea to have your tire alignment checked by a Master Certified Technician every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. There’s no warning light for tire alignment, but your vehicle will certainly let you know when it’s time for service by displaying these symptoms:

  • Noisy, screechy tires
  • Crooked steering wheel even while driving straight
  • Vibrating steering wheel
  • Pulling to the left or right
  • Inconsistent tire tread wear

Why Does Wheel Alignment Matter?

All in all, tire alignment boosts drivability and performance, allowing you to enjoy smooth, responsive feedback. In addition, you’ll get the most out of your tires, as they won’t wear down as quickly. If you put off a tire alignment, your tires may experience:

  • Feathering: When the tread is smooth on one side and sharp on the other
  • Camber Wear: Either the inside or outside of the tire has experienced significantly more wear
  • Heel/Toe Wear: One side of your tread blocks has worn more quickly than the other in a circumferential direction

Tire alignment directly affects steering, balance, and cornering, which is why it’s crucial to entrust your Mercedes-Benz to the Master Certified Technicians at Mercedes-Benz of Ontario.
